Tianjin hand-knitting set foot on the international fast track

In recent years, the women's hand-woven industry in Tianjin has experienced remarkable growth. What was once a traditional craft has now evolved into a thriving sector with its own independent brands and global recognition. This transformation has not only preserved cultural heritage but also created new economic opportunities for many. It is reported that the Tianjin Women’s Hand Weaving Industry Association has established 95 leading hand-woven bases across the city, along with over 490 weaving sites spread throughout 18 districts and counties. These initiatives have provided employment to more than 40,000 individuals, primarily laid-off workers and rural residents, helping to reduce local unemployment and empower women through skill development. The association currently handles a wide range of orders, including folk crafts, clothing, home textiles, and other five major product series featuring over 1,000 different varieties. The craftsmanship involved includes knitting, crocheting, sewing, and embroidery. With increasing demand, the industry has expanded its reach to more than 20 countries and regions, such as South Korea, Italy, Japan, the United States, and Germany. Through this expansion, the traditional model of family-based workshops and scattered production has gradually given way to a more structured, industrialized, and commercialized system. This shift ensures better working conditions, stable income, and long-term sustainability for the women involved. As a result, the hand-woven industry in Tianjin is no longer just a local tradition—it has become a symbol of innovation, empowerment, and global connection.
