Bag Lady Interview: Melinda - From A Retail Buyer Perspective

WHY HOZEN?

I’ve always been drawn to Hozen because of its unique combination of functionality, style, and eco-consciousness. The bags are not just practical but also super trendy and fun. People often stop me to ask where I got my bag, which is such a great conversation starter! Beyond the product itself, I’m inspired by the brand’s mission to promote sustainability through innovative materials like Piñatex. My personal favorite has to be the silver Piñatex belt bag—it’s sleek, stylish, and perfect for everyday use.

I’d describe my style as a mix of vintage charm and modern minimalism. Friends often tell me my outfits remind them of the 90s, but I don’t think of it as strictly retro. Instead, I like to blend timeless pieces with contemporary touches. You won’t see a lot of big-name brands in my wardrobe—I prefer finding hidden gems at thrift stores or supporting small designers. Jumpsuits and overalls are definitely staples in my closet—they’re effortless, comfortable, and always stylish!

FUN FACT.

Although I was born in California, my first language was actually Portuguese. Growing up in a community of Portuguese immigrants, I learned Spanish as my second language. It was fascinating how closely related these two languages were, and I ended up picking them up simultaneously. Now, speaking multiple languages has become an integral part of who I am, and it’s something I cherish deeply.

IDEAL DAY?

Starting my day with a warm cup of coffee on the balcony while scrolling through emails or listening to a podcast. Then heading into the city for work, followed by catching up with friends over dinner and drinks. There’s nothing quite like those moments when you’re surrounded by loved ones and good food!

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR DOWN TIME?

During my free time, I love hanging out with family and friends (quarantine permitting, of course). Cooking new recipes, exploring nature, exercising, and traveling whenever possible are some of my favorite activities. It’s all about balance—finding joy in both solitude and connection.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Small businesses and entrepreneurs inspire me endlessly. Watching someone take an idea and turn it into reality is incredibly motivating. My parents have always been my greatest source of inspiration—they came to this country as immigrants and built their own successful business from scratch. Their hard work ethic and determination have shaped who I am today.

WHAT'S KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

I’ve been juggling several side projects lately, including starting a small garden at home. Taking daily walks has become my go-to way to clear my mind, and staying connected with loved ones via Facetime has been essential during these times. Baking has also become a new hobby of mine—I can’t resist trying out new recipes every other week!

FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?

The island of São Jorge in the Azores holds a special place in my heart. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, and every visit deepens my connection to my heritage. Being there feels like coming home—it’s where I truly feel grounded.

GUILTY PLEASURE?

Binge-watching entire seasons of shows in one sitting—you know, the guilty pleasure everyone secretly loves doing but won’t admit to!
