camelia’s denim rush hour dress

Today, we’re thrilled to welcome Camelia back to our Advisors Circle. She’s no stranger to contributing amazing content, having previously shared tutorials like “How to Draft Trouser Pockets,” along with patterns such as the Every Day Rush Hour Dress, Terrace Dresses, and Neighborhood Sweatshirts. This time around, she’s here to showcase her incredible denim version of the Rush Hour Dress. --- I’ve always loved working with denim—it’s such a versatile fabric—and when I stumbled upon Liesl + Co.’s Rush Hour Dress pattern, which specifically suggests denim as one of its recommended fabrics, I couldn’t resist giving it a try. With all those beautiful seams, this dress was perfect for experimenting with topstitching. The pattern itself is identical to my earlier cotton sateen version, though I made a small tweak at the neckline. To add some flair, I decided to include a center front split. It breaks up the solid dark denim look while adding a touch of elegance and personality. To achieve this, I sketched out the facing freehand based on how deep I wanted the opening to be. For my first Rush Hour dress, I finished the edges with a bias band, but for this denim version, I opted for a facing instead. To ensure the split held its shape well, I interfaced the facing with medium-weight interfacing. --- Once I finalized the design details, the actual sewing process was incredibly smooth and satisfying. As someone who adores topstitching, I took full advantage of this opportunity. On my trusty older Pfaff machine, I paired the right thread with a topstitching needle, which has a wider hole to accommodate thicker threads. Before diving into the main piece, I tested different tension settings and stitch lengths on scrap fabric. A stitch length of 3.5 worked beautifully, creating clean, even lines that stood out without overwhelming the garment. While I usually prefer to sew and topstitch in stages, if I didn’t have access to a second machine, I’d definitely work in bursts—sewing as much as possible before switching needles and threads. Luckily, my setup allowed me to focus entirely on the topstitching, which turned out to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the project. --- The results? Absolutely stunning! The combination of the denim fabric and bold topstitching gave the dress a unique, eye-catching appeal. As someone who appreciates both functionality and style, I’m thrilled with how this piece turned out. It’s now become one of my favorite garments, and I can’t wait to experiment further by making the peplum version of the Rush Hour Dress—I’ve seen countless inspiring renditions online! If there’s one takeaway from this project, it’s the importance of testing your materials beforehand. Whether you’re working with denim or any other fabric, tweaking your settings ensures the best possible outcome. Overall, this experience reinforced my passion for sewing and highlighted just how transformative a well-chosen fabric can be. --- This dress has quickly become a staple in my wardrobe, and I hope it inspires others to explore denim patterns too. If you’re ever hesitant about diving into something new, remember that practice makes perfect—and sometimes, all it takes is a little creativity to elevate a simple pattern into something extraordinary. Happy sewing!
