camelia’s denim rush hour dress

Today, we're thrilled to welcome Camelia back to our Advisors Circle. She's known for some fantastic tutorials like her guide on drafting trouser pockets, as well as patterns such as the Every Day Rush Hour Dress, Terrace Dresses, and Neighborhood Sweatshirts. This time, she's here to showcase her amazing denim version of the Rush Hour Dress. The moment I laid eyes on Liesl + Co.'s Rush Hour Dress pattern and noticed that denim was among the recommended fabrics, I knew I had to create my own denim version. Those intricate seams provided the perfect opportunity to experiment with topstitching, which I absolutely adore. This dress is crafted from the same pattern as my earlier cotton sateen version, with just a slight tweak at the neckline. To add a touch of elegance and break the monotony of the dark denim, I decided to incorporate a center front split. Based on how deep I wanted the opening to be, I carefully freehanded the facing. For my first Rush Hour dress, I finished the edges with a bias band, but this time, I opted for a facing instead. To ensure the split held its shape, I interfaced the facing with medium-weight interfacing. I couldn't be happier with this modification! Once that was done, the rest of the sewing process flew by. Topstitching is one of my favorite parts of garment construction, and I’m lucky enough to have an older Pfaff machine that works beautifully for this task. Using the right thread and a topstitching needle with a larger eye, I quickly adjusted the tension and stitch length through some tests on scrap fabric. If I didn’t have access to a second machine, I’d simply sew as much as possible before switching threads and needles to complete the topstitching in one go. As you can see, I went a little overboard with the topstitching—it was incredibly enjoyable! The key, I found, is experimenting with thread tension and opting for a slightly longer stitch length. Here, I used a 3.5 stitch length, which gave the dress a more polished appearance. I absolutely love this pattern! I’ve already made two dresses I adore, and I’m itching to try the peplum version next—there are so many stunning renditions out there to inspire me. * * * As a final note, if you’re interested in creating your own denim Rush Hour Dress, don’t hesitate to dive in. The combination of bold topstitching and a classic pattern creates something truly special. Whether you're a seasoned sewer or new to the craft, this pattern offers endless possibilities to customize and make your own mark. Happy sewing!
