Argentina determines that there is dumping in Chinese denim

On September 8, 2010, Argentina's Ministry of Industry officially announced the final decision on an anti-dumping investigation against Chinese denim. The ruling concluded that Chinese denim was being sold at dumped prices in the Argentine market. As a result, the government set a minimum FOB price of $3.13 per square meter for denim imports from China. Any importer declaring a lower price would be required to pay tariffs based on this reference rate. This regulation was put in place for a period of five years, aiming to protect the domestic textile industry from unfair competition. The process began earlier, on March 30, 2009, when Argentina initiated an anti-dumping probe into Chinese denim. The products affected were classified under several customs codes, including 5208.430, 5210.4910, 5209.4420, 5209.4290, 5214.2210, and 5211.4290. These codes covered various types of denim fabric imported from China. In a significant development, on November 9, 2009, Argentina's Ministry of Production issued an early determination in the case. It imposed a temporary minimum FOB price of $3.13 per square meter for the products involved, which became effective on November 14, 2009, and remained in force for four months. This move reflected Argentina’s ongoing efforts to regulate the import of textiles and ensure fair trade practices. The initial temporary measure was later extended and formalized into a long-term policy, highlighting the country’s commitment to addressing dumping issues within its borders. The continued enforcement of these rules over the following years demonstrated the importance of maintaining a level playing field in the textile sector.
