The difference between sapphire and other blue gems

Sapphire and other blue gems can be identified by identifying parameters such as refractive index, dispersion and hardness.

In the absence of professional equipment, it is often distinguished by its hardness and strong dichroism: sapphire is the only blue gemstone with a hardness lower than that of diamond and higher than cubic zirconia. Simply scribe the cubic zirconia with the ribs of the gemstone to be tested. If it can be swiped, it proves that the gemstone to be tested is sapphire; if it is not, it is not.

Secondly, since sapphire has strong dichroism, it can be seen from different angles with the naked eye, and two different colors, blue and green, or blue and blue-green can be seen. Finally, the hexagonal growth zone can also be used as an auxiliary condition for the identification of sapphire. The hexagonal growth zone must be sapphire. Nothing is not necessarily not, and the growth zone may not be obvious.

The optical properties and physical properties of natural sapphire and synthetic sapphire are basically the same, so it is difficult to separate the two with the above parameters. However, you can observe two points carefully. If you can see the hexagonal growth belt or the filiform rutile inclusion, it must be a natural sapphire. Even if no growth belt is observed, there is no inclusion and professional identification is required to finally confirm whether it is a natural sapphire.
